AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test. This test is conducted by the Indian Air Force for selection of officers in all branches of the IAF (except medical and dental) viz. Flying Branch (Short Service Commission only), Technical Branch (Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission) and Ground Duty Branch (Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission). AFCAT is conducted twice a year (in the month of February and August). The advertisement for the same is published in the months of December and June respectively.

Applications are invited from male and female from Indian citizens as per Citizenship Act 1955 for the following courses commencing in July 2017 for grant of Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent/Short Service Commission in Technical and Ground Duty branches

IAF conducts a written examination as the first phase for the selection of Officers through AFCAT exam. The selection is done in three phases including

Stage 1:

The detailed exam pattern is as below

  • Test nature: Written
  • Total Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Total no. of Questions: 100
  • Total marks: 300 (each question worth 3 marks)
  • Negative marking: 1 mark for every wrong answer
  • Subjects if Written test

    2. Numerical ability
    3. Reasoning
    4. General Awareness
    5. Military Aptitude

Stage 2:

Only candidates, who clear the stage-I, will be promoted to stage-II where document verificationwill be done to ensure the eligibility of candidates.

Stage 3:

Stage 3 of the AFCAT selection process involves Psychological Test, Group Test and Interview

Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT)

PABT test will be conducted only for Flying branch applicants.

AFCAT Syllabus

  1. Verbal Ability English: Comprehension, Error Detection, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Testing of Vocabulary, Sentence Completion etc.
  2. Numerical Ability: Decimal Fraction, Simplification, Average, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, and Simple Interest, Profit & Loss
  3. Reasoning & Military Aptitude: Verbal Skills and Spatial Ability
  4. General Awareness: History, Sports, Geography, Environment, Culture, Current Affairs, Politics, Civics, Basic Sciences, Defence, Art etc.

Eligibility for TECHNICAL BRANCHES

(i) Educational Qualification

(a) For Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) {AE (L)}

A complete 4 years of qualification from a recognized Institution or passed Sections A and B exam of AMIE India or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership examination of the Institute of Elec. and Telecomm. Engineers by actual studies should be covered by the aspirant.

(b) For Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical) {AE (M)}

The same procedure as given above shall be introduced in educational requirement of this post.

(ii) Physical Standards
